The EMS Program at HFC offers the options of certificates of achievement in Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic, or the option of an Associate in Applied Science degree. The HFC Paramedic Program has been awarded the highest level of approval through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Bureau of EMS, Trauma and Preparedness.

    The OCC Paramedic Program is offered once per year beginning each fall. The lecture and lab courses are 15 weeks long per semester, meeting once a week in the fall and two times per week in the winter, each for six-hour sessions. Students will also take EMS 1400, an extended EMT clinical in the fall if not completed prior, and the Paramedic clinical in the winter with EMS 2200 and 2300.

Wayne County Community College District is a State of Michigan, Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) EMS & Trauma Systems approved Education Sponsor. Therefore, students that successfully meet the completion criteria for Medical First Responder, Basic EMT, or Paramedic will also receive a certificate of completion and are eligible for Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) Program certification and the National Registry for EMT’s certification examination necessary for and Michigan licensure as a EMS Professional.

This four semester program consists of classroom and online components. Hospital clinical rotations are performed within various Ascension hospitals around Michigan. The capstone field internship is with various EMS agencies in Genesee and the surrounding counties. Successful completion of the Ascension Genesys Hospital Paramedic Program prepares the student for the NREMT Exam and State of Michigan licensure.

    This course is designed for a licensed EMT interested in becoming a paramedic. Emphasis will be placed on improving current methods and knowledge of pre-hospital care. Additionally, the student gains advanced knowledge in respiratory, cardiovascular, and drug therapy. Our course is a hybrid course offering online studies coupled with one day per week of instructor-led classroom and one day dedicated to lab time. To accommodate scheduling conflicts for students and reduce driving time and distance, we offer the required classroom/lab sessions on various days and locations each week. This program is competency based. To achieve this, didactic hours and clinical hours will be evenly divided. Total course hours are 1197. Course length is approximately 14 months.

    Emergency medical technicians and paramedics are trained to perform critical emergency medical intervention for both the traumatically injured and the acutely ill patient. Upon successful completion, Kalamazoo Valley’s basic EMT and emergency medical services programs qualify students to take the appropriate licensure exams. These programs have separate application processes and can be taken individually, however completion of a basic EMT program is one of the prerequisites for acceptance into the emergency medical services program. The associate of applied science degree in emergency medical services (EMS) option combines the basic EMT and paramedic-level coursework with additional general education courses.

    The Emergency Medical Services: Paramedic Diploma is a CAAHEP-accredited program that prepares the student for employment as an advanced emergency medical care giver. A 250-hour, non-paid externship experience with a local ambulance company is the capstone course for completion of the program requirement.

    The EMS/Paramedic Certificate (Program Code 153) prepares students to function at advanced levels for pre-­hospital emergency support services. Successful graduates are eligible to sit for the National Registry Exam which opens employment opportunities in many other states in the pre-­hospital field of EMS, public safety, and fire rescue. Graduates may also work in the emergency departments of hospitals and free-standing clinics, and work as safety coordinators for industrial plants. Students are expected to complete a rigorous course of study and to meet minimum requirements established by the Michigan Department of Community Health.
